Slack

Connect Slack so important competitor changes, reports and saved question answers post to the channel your team already reads.

An alert email is easy to miss. Connect Slack and SpyGlow posts important competitor changes to a channel your team already reads, so the people who need to act see them the same day.

Slack is available on Pro, Growth and Teams. On Free, the Slack card on the Integrations page shows "Upgrade required".

Connect your workspace

  1. Open your account menu (your avatar) and choose Integrations.
  2. On the Slack card, click Connect.
  3. Slack asks you to let SpyGlow into your workspace. Approve it.
  4. You come back to Integrations with the Slack settings open.

SpyGlow asks for permission to see your list of channels and to post messages. It does not read your messages.

Slack is connected to your own SpyGlow login. On a team, each person connects their own, and alerts for a competitor go through the Slack connection of the teammate who added that competitor.

Choose a channel

After you connect, SpyGlow asks you to choose a channel. Pick one from Select a channel and click Save. The settings then show which channel SpyGlow is posting to.

  • Private channels appear in the list only after you add SpyGlow to them in Slack.
  • To switch channels later, click Change next to the channel name.

Click Test to send a test message. If it arrives, Slack is set up.

Decide what reaches Slack

Three settings work together.

Turn Slack on for your competitors. Slack starts off for every new competitor. Open the competitor, go to the Settings tab and expand Alert Preferences. Either turn on Use global alert defaults, or turn it off and choose Slack under Where should alerts go?. Click Save. See Alerts and notifications.

Set the importance threshold. In the Slack settings, the Importance Threshold slider runs from 1 to 10 and starts at 5. Slack gets only changes scored at or above it. This works on top of each competitor's alert level. If a competitor alerts on High impact only (8 to 10), Slack gets only those changes, even with the slider at 5.

Leave Alert Types off. With every switch under Alert Types off, Slack receives every kind of change. This is the default, and the setting we recommend.

Click Save Preferences when you are done.

What a Slack alert holds

Each alert shows:

  • the competitor's name and the kind of change
  • the page that changed
  • the importance score out of 10
  • when SpyGlow found the change
  • a short summary
  • View Full Report and View Competitor buttons that open SpyGlow

Send a report to Slack

You can post any monitoring report to your channel, whatever its score. Open the report, click the arrow button next to Copy, and choose Send to Slack. The post holds the report's headline, its significance, the number of pages changed and pricing changes, the main takeaway and a link back to the report.

Get saved question answers in Slack

When you save an AskGlow question, turn on Slack under Send the answer to. The switch shows your channel name, and it stays greyed out until Slack is connected and a channel is chosen. Each scheduled answer posts to that channel with a View in SpyGlow button. A very long answer is cut short in Slack, and the full answer stays in SpyGlow. See Saved questions.

Disconnect

Open Integrations, click Manage on the Slack card, then click Disconnect. Nothing more posts to Slack. Your changes, reports and saved questions stay in SpyGlow.

Disconnecting in SpyGlow leaves the app installed in your Slack workspace. Remove it in Slack too if you no longer want it there.

To connect again, click Connect and choose a channel again.
